  • Aline London

    Aine London received her BSc in Pharmacology from the University of Liverpool, and then traveled to Africa to work as a volunteer at a hospital, a school and an orphanage in Tanzania. She gained her teaching diploma and Masters in Education from the University of Cambridge. She worked for five years in the UK high-school education system before moving to the U.S.​

    Allison Heller is a graduate of the University at Albany with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and Psychology and she has a Master’s Degree from Long Island University in School Counseling. She provides students with academic, social, and emotional support.

  • Brian Mahoney

    Dr. Brian Mahoney has more than 15 years of experience in private education. He has taught history, English and geography, and coached several sports including lacrosse and basketball. Dr. Mahoney received a Bachelor of Arts in History from Siena College. His Master’s Degree is in teaching and he holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Fordham University. He has served as EF Academy New York’s Head of School for the past five years.

  • Christina Urgureanu

    Cristina Ungureanu received her Master's Degree in Counseling and Guidance from New York University, and her Bachelor's Degree in Visual Arts Education with a minor in Psychology from SUNY New Paltz. She provides academic, college, social, and emotional counseling for EF Academy students and works with the guidance team to ensure success of the students by helping them adjust to studying in the U.S.

  • Daniel Paccione

    Daniel Paccione holds a Master’s Degree in International Educational Development from Teachers College, Columbia University. Daniel has worked for EF over the last five years in the role of Director of Global Engagement and Product Innovation where he developed EF’s Global Student Leaders Summit series. Prior to this role, he worked with the International Baccalaureate (IB) to help promote its mission of an "education for a better world.”

  • Denise Colbert

    Denise Colbert attended Coppin State University and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sports Medicine. She is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Science at Ball State University. Recently, Denise worked at The SEED School of Maryland College Preparatory boarding school for seven years where she served as a Students Life Counselor, Behavior Specialist and the Dean of Students. She has been working with youth for 12 years and counting.

    Drew Granucci graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Spanish Language & Literature and an MBA from George Washington University. He worked as an Admissions Director at George Washington University and American University in Washington, DC prior to joining EF Academy. Drew has worked with international students as a volunteer for over ten years with Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership, an international youth leadership organization.

  • Emily Aquina

    Emily Aquina graduated from Siena College with a major in Business Management and a minor in Women’s Studies. Before becoming part of the EF Academy New York team, Emily worked as a preschool teacher for 10 years. She was also extremely involved in the orientation program at Siena College and she was an educator in the Science Barge program at Groundwork Hudson Valley.

  • Fabiana DaSilva

    Fabiana Da Silva is originally from São Paulo, Brazil and she has a BA in English and Portuguese and an MS in TESOL. She has been teaching ESL/EFL for over fourteen years, which includes being an EFL teacher and the head of the EFL department at Wizard Language School in Brazil. Fabiana started at EF as an ILS ESL instructor and was promoted to the University Preparation Program.

  • Gavin Robinson

    Gavin Robinson obtained his Bachelor of Kinesiology from Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia along with his Bachelor of Education Degree. He also has a postgraduate degree in Administration, Management and Leadership from Bristol University, Bristol England. Gavin has been teaching and involved in administration for over fifteen years and has worked in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Germany and Canada.

  • Ginny Borton

    Ginny Borton has been a theater educator for over 20 years. She comes from a professional acting background. Ginny grew up and attended schools all over the world - Taiwan, Indonesia, West Pakistan, Turkey, India, Saudi Arabia and Hawaii - and brings personal experiences and enthusiasm to her teaching. Ginny has a BA Degree from The New School in NYC and a Master's Degree in Educational Theater from NYU.

  • Jackie Looser

    Jackie Looser graduated from Siena College with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and completed her Masters in Professional School Counseling at Sage Graduate School. Since graduating, Jackie has worked in college admissions, and served as a school counselor for high school and middle school students.

  • Joel Kwabi

    Born and raised in Ghana, Joel Kwabi attended Haverford College in Pennsylvania, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. He worked for two years at Morgan Stanley as an Operations Analyst and Client Service Representative. He left the financial arena to pursue a career in education by completing a Masters in Math Education at Teachers College, Columbia University before joining EF Academy in 2010.

  • Kim Stein

    Kim Stein holds a BS in Biology and a teacher certification from Saint Joseph College in West Hartford, CT. She completed her Masters in Educational Leadership at Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY. She founded a language school in Madrid, Spain where she lived for 10 years. She joined EF Academy in 2010 and is the Head of 9th and 10th grade and the IGCSE Coordinator.

  • Lauren Ciallella

    Lauren Ciallella holds a BA in Psychology from Villanova University, and a MSEd in School Counseling from The College of Saint Rose. She worked as a school counselor in a public high school for many years prior to starting at EF Academy in 2013. Learning from her students who represent a variety of backgrounds and sharing in their successes, whether they be personal goals or college placements, are the most rewarding parts of her position.

  • Lauren Kubis

    Lauren Kubis graduated from the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada with a Bachelor’s Degree in Honors Psychology and Medaille College in Buffalo, New York with a Master’s Degree in Education. She has previously worked in the social service sector providing vocational rehabilitation counseling and creating educational plans. Lauren is an experienced international educator with experience teaching in Canada, China and the U.S.

  • Marc Johnson

    Marc Johnson teaches IB Literature and Theory of Knowledge and is also the Head of the English Department. He has taught for over 20 years in various schools around the globe. Most recently, he spent eight years teaching in China at Shanghai High School and the High School Affiliated to Renmin University. He received his B.A. in English and Religion from Faith College and his M.A. in Ancient Literature from Central Seminary.

  • Michael Muska

    Michael Muska is nationally recognized in the field of university admissions and served as the Associate Director of Admissions at Brown University and Oberlin College. He graduated from the University of Connecticut and earned his MS from the University of Massachusetts. Michael also co-authored Getting In, a book about college admissions for high school students.

  • Michelle Ferrera

    Michelle Ferrera graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Human Development and Family Studies. She then went on to receive her MSEd in School Counseling from Hunter College, City University of New York. Prior to joining EF Academy in November 2013, Michelle worked as an Admissions Counselor for the State University of New York, Maritime College.

  • Nicole Rages

    Nichole Rages studied Psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Public Affairs at Park University. She has traveled in Central America, Asia and Europe, and taught English in South Korea, Spain and Italy. She enjoys working with children, especially in an international and academic setting, and loves being a resource for children who wish to broaden their cultural and academic horizons.

  • Patrick Dunn

    Patrick Dunn received his Bachelor's Degree in Education and History while minoring in Archaeology and Ancient History in Oklahoma. He obtained his Master's Degree while in South Africa in Egyptology from the University of Stellenbosch and completed his PhD course work through the University of South Africa in Egyptology.

  • Paul Giordano

    Paul Giordano received his BA in Social Studies Education from The College of Saint Rose in upstate New York and earned his Master's Degree in Literacy Education from Mercy College. He joined EF Academy as a history teacher in 2012. Since then, he has taught IGCSE history, IGCSE global perspectives, IB history and IB business and management. As the Athletic Director, Paul supervises all athletic teams and clubs.

  • Peter Stivali

    Peter Stivali's education background begins with his BS in Social Science Education from Plymouth State University. He used this degree to teach U.S. history for five years and honors economics for 14 years in the public school system in the U.S. Peter received his MBA from the University of Phoenix. His goal was to use his MBA to teach business and EF Academy New York provided him the opportunity.

    Ryan May received his MFA in Creative Writing at The New School and a BA in Writing and Literature from Naropa University. He has over eight years of experience working in college admissions both domestically and internationally. He is dedicated to providing holistic college counseling that ensures the students at EF Academy meet their academic goals.

  • Sandra Comas

    Dr. Sandra Comas earned her Ph.D., Master's and Bachelor's Degrees from Yale University, Master's Degrees from Stanford University, a Global Executive MBA from IE Business School, and a business teaching credential from Harvard Business School. She has taught at Stanford, Yale, the City University of New York, and IE.

  • Scott Hirschmugl

    Scott Hirschmugl is a Certified Public Accountant with an MBA (finance, international business) from New York University. Prior to coming to EF, he spent 20 years in banking and finance, primarily in global mergers / acquisitions and business development. Leaving the corporate world, Scott was seeking a more personally fulfilling and rewarding career and being part of the EF team that helps shape young lives has far exceeded his expectations.

  • Sophia Pak

    Sophia Pak has a Master’s Degree in Education in School Counseling from Teacher’s College, Columbia University. After receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Foreign Language Education from NYU, she taught Japanese to high school students at New Heights Academy Charter School and interned as a guidance counselor at a high school in Manhattan. She is dedicated to working with her students to help them develop new insights and maximize their potential.

    Stephanie Hendrick has a BS in Psychology from Union College and a BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) from Regis College. She has been working as a pediatric nurse for almost four years and previously worked on the pediatric ICU at Westchester Medical Center. Stephanie came to EF Academy to experience and learn about different cultures.

EF Academy’s American high school in New York is tucked in the quiet, suburban town of Thornwood and it is characterized by the many pathways, trails and woodland that surround its academic and residence buildings.


Just down the hill from the school is Rose Hill Shopping Center, a small plaza with restaurants and shops. The famous island of Manhattan is less than an hour away. You will have plenty of time to explore the cultural hub of New York City on excursions organized by the school staff. 

Theater students step into the spotlight in our beautiful auditorium where full-length plays are staged twice a year. Science labs equipped with state-of- the-art equipment and welcoming art studios not only enrich your classes, they also host science and art clubs after school and are available for you to use for independent study. Complete your school day with a bit of physical activity in our fully equipped gym, dance studio or basketball courts, or get some fresh air by going on a bike ride around eight kilometers of off-road trails on campus using one of the school’s own mountain bikes.
