Costa Ricans are friendly and your host family will be eager to welcome you into their home. All our families are rigorously screened. Enjoy their hospitality while you get used to the Spanish language.
Each family is different
In Costa Rica, families tend to be slightly larger than you might be used to, with older children and grandparents sometimes living at home or nearby. It is impossible to tell you what a “typical” Costa Rican host family is like, because they all come from different backgrounds and places. All families are rigorously screened.
“Pura vida”: living with your host family
In Costa Rica, one of the most common phrases is “pura vida.” It literally means “pure life,” but in everyday usage it has many meanings. It can mean, “Everything is going well,” “cool” or “agreed.” It also refers to living life to its fullest, and for many people it is connected to the laid back, relaxed way of life in Costa Rica. Living with your host family will get you acquainted with this philosophy on life. You will experience “pura vida” as you share meals with and get to know your host family.
Care and support in the family environment
Your exchange year in Costa Rica will be one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences of your life, but it can also be challenging.
